It is one of the most pirated applications in history. That is about to end with the final goodbye to Microsoft Office. Let’s welcome Microsoft 365.

After three decades with us, Microsoft Office says goodbye. From now on, it will be called Microsoft 365. This will bring a series of changes in the apps and websites of use.

Released in 1990, Microsoft Office quickly became the benchmark office suite. It has always been costly, so home users managed to get it through unethical means.

In recent years, Microsoft has been decommissioning Office as a suite for on-premises use to turn it into a cloud subscription service within Microsoft 365. Office subscriptions have been renamed Office 365.

The last version that works in local mode without the Internet, Office 2021, was deprived of most of the new features of the cloud version. In a surreal cover note, he spent more time harping on its shortcomings and convincing us not to buy Office 2021 and subscribe to Office 365 than explaining what it offered.

Goodbye to Microsoft Office

If there was ambiguity before, today, it is over. Microsoft announces that it stops using the Office name, which becomes Microsoft 365. Consequently, the Office.com website, the free Office apps, and the mobile version will be renamed Microsoft 365.

Of course, they do not change the name of the apps included in the suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. That will stay. But in the coming weeks, they will receive new logos and a facelift to remove references to Office.

And what about the offline version, the Office 2021 office suite? Well, it officially becomes what Microsoft calls “legacy.” It will continue to sell and keep it stable and secure, but it won’t add any of the future 365 new features, which it didn’t have much of since launch. New versions are not expected.

Microsoft Office says goodbye to us, the benchmark office suite. It is now called Microsoft 365. Like so many other things, it is disappearing in favor of subscriptions, which are advantageous for companies but not for users.
